Lesson One
How Do I sit?
To some, meditation is about breathing correctly. To others it may be about ensuring you hold the correct posture. For others it may be the ritual involved. But this is not our way. We have found that although these systems are extremely helpful and give people peace of mind and relaxation and enable them to grow and develop, they do not suit everyone. For us, meditation technique or systems are no different from choosing clothes or shoes. What suits one does not suit another. So our advice is to keep going until you find the method or system that feels really comfortable to you. We eventually found this method, Raja Yoga that worked for us. There is no need get your body into a particular position. Sitting helps whether in a chair or on the floor, but ensuring you have the correct posture is not necessarily relevant to having a good meditation. Breathing technique is not important because we have found that as you relax and move towards a meditative state your breathing naturally slows down and the rhythm changes. You naturally breathe to help your body relax. You are doing something natural you don’t have to force it there is no need to push it. The key is the willingness to try and a place where you feel safe and comfortable when you start. It helps at first, if you can find somewhere quiet to sit. If possible find somewhere where you are not going to be interrupted. If you want to you can play relaxing music either in the room or through ear phones. It all helps to get you and your brain in the mood. If you don’t have any of these things it doesn’t matter. Graham, for example, goes every morning and sits on a rock on the beach and watches the sea ebb and flow. He finds the environment works for him The sea provides his music and the rhythm he likes. It may not be possible for you. Sitting in a park may work for you. Providing it’s not the children’s play area! The point is it doesn’t matter where or how you sit, you just need to be comfortable. And in a place where you feel safe.
