Chapter 2

The Pleasant life

In a  pleasant life, it is suggested that, you gain pleasure and therefore happiness, through your five senses. It gives you pleasure that is here one moment and gone the next. You are invited to a great restaurant and enjoy a wonderful meal. You have great pleasure and feel good and if you are lucky the taste, thoughts etc stay with you for a couple of days and then you are in search of something else.

Perhaps you enjoy football; you support a team and watch them regularly. You get great pleasure during the match of watching your favourite player or players, you shout at the referee, you go through all the emotions. Of anger, frustration, happiness, satisfaction, elation etc and then after 90 minutes you feel depressed or elated depending upon the result and the way you saw the match. You talk about the match for a couple of days, and then……. How long did the enjoyment last? How long were you happy??

After a long hard day at work, you relax, by listening to some music, perhaps you are a walking listener or a travelling listener. Do you listen to the music to block out what is happening on the journey or do you sink into the chair and let it roll over you, completely absorbed in the music. Whatever, how long does the feeling of relaxation last? How long before you are running at full speed again?

Watching television: does it relax you? Or does it put you to sleep? Does being involve in your regular soap help you to withdraw from the pressures of life? If so for how long before you are back there again.

Perhaps your way of relaxing is to have a good chat with your friends. To unload all the day’s or week’s stresses whilst you enjoy a drink together. A brilliant way of sharing your problems. As we are told; a problem shared is a problem halved but for how long does it work?

This form of happiness, although beneficial, is not sustainable. The Pleasant Life is here today and gone tomorrow, the relaxation methods and techniques work for a while and then it is back to your normal stressed state.

Yes you have a Pleasant life but are you really happy or only happy whilst on the fix?
