Chapter 9
Raja Yoga
The information in this e-book has been based on Raja Yoga. A meditation practice with knowledge that brings a spiritual perspective to reality. As you will have seen in Chapter 5, on meditation, there are some quite different and distinct forms of meditation depending on where you learn and who you learn with. Some have Gurus, some are based on physical postures, some on breathing techniques, others on a form of mantra. Raja Yoga, the royal yoga, does not have any Gurus, is not based on techniques, devotional rituals or a regime of physical postures. It’s aim is to enable us to gain insight into the workings of our mind, intellect and habits and as a result change the way we behave in every day situations. As a result people who practice Raja Yoga, at the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University (BKWSU), see themselves as students engaged in a learning or unlearning process. The Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University was founded in 1936. In 1951 the University's world headquarters moved to Mount Abu in Rajasthan, India. It has 4,000 centres in over 70 countries and is a non-governmental organisation in general consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council, in consultative status with The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and affiliated to the Department of Public Information (DPI). The BKWSU believe that spiritual knowledge is the basic right of every human being and therefore should be free to everyone. It does not charge for any of its courses or activities. As a result all the buildings and courses are run by people who live and work in the community and volunteer their talents and spare time. Although the BKWSU is a registered charity in many countries, it does not raise funds. Finances come from the voluntary contributions of those who have found personal benefit through the courses and activities.
